(KRON) -- A San Jose man was arrested last weekend for allegedly trying to murder his neighbor, according to San Jose police.

On Sunday, Oct. 25, around 9 a.m., San Jose police responded to a home on the 1800 block of Naples Drive after receiving reports of an assault with a deadly weapon. Officers said they found a man who was violently attacked by his neighbor with a machete. Police said the victim, identified as San Jose resident Alberto Cuevas, was suffering from head injuries.

Cuevas said the attack happened in his backyard. He was transported to the hospital and determined to have non-life-threatening injuries. He told KRON4 he ended up needing 11 staples.

The suspect, identified as 49-year-old Carlos Tello, fled to his residence and barricaded himself inside, refusing to cooperate with responding officers, police officials said.

Several hours later, around 4:20 p.m., officers were able to take Tello into custody. He was charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and resisting arrest and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail.

The incident followed a history of disputes between the neighbors. Cuevas had previously filed multiple police reports involving allegations of theft, trespassing and threats, and had an active restraining order against Tello at the time of the attack.
